Description
“Vrefodohos”
Sculpture from Penteli marble with metallic details and gold leaf finishings.
« My father and my mother rejected me but the Lord accepted me»
This sentence was written on the now known “vrefodoho” , at the Foundling Hospital
of Athens In Pireos Street.
From publishings of the time, It is said that at least 600 to 700 infants were
abandoned only in 1950, mostly girls.
« Females are a bigger burden for the life of their parents»
According to the explanation that was given by the head of the Athens foundling
Hospital.
The child minder / vrefodohos -enclosed box – even though a medieval practice,
succeeded in protecting and saving many lives.
For the pure souls that instead of the warm hug of their mother, met abandonment
and rejection , I dedicate this sculpture .
Marble as a material symbolizes the coldness that these kids felt while being born
and the white symbolizes the purity of their souls.
