Description
George Zongolopoulos (March 1, 1903 – May 11, 2004) was born in Athens and studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts. He initially worked as an architect at the Ministry of Education and continued his studies in Sculpture in France and in Italy.
A representative of the Generation of 30’s, progressive and restless in spirit, he experimented with many techniques and materials. The “eternal teenager”, as he was often called, as an artist searched for moderation, harmony and balance in his art. His rich artistic activity extends for almost eight decades and is distinguished by his unceasing desire for renewal and evolution.
He represented Greece in Biennales (since 1940 and for six consecutive decades he had a presence in Venice), while he participated in National exhibitions and took part in dozens of solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad. Many emblematic works in monumental scale that Zongolopoulos created, have been placed in the public space of Greece, as well as in Belgium, the U.S.A. and Egypt.
During his long lifetime, he received international awards and distinctions, while his works held in public spaces and in important Greek and foreign collections and museums.
In 2004, he established the welfare GEORGE ZONGOLOPOULOS FOUNDATION based at his residence and studio in P. Psychiko, Attica.
